Belarus (“White Russia”) is a former Soviet republic that suffered greatly under the Nazi occupation. As a result, numerous memorials throughout the country are a testament to those historical atrocities. The most impressive of all is the Khatyn Memorial, which honors the fallen of the 1943 Khatyn Massacre. We’ll discover Belarus’ fascinating and often somber history through its monuments, due to its long, war-torn heritage. From the Brest Citadel, a key point in the German-Soviet War, to 17th-century Slonim Synagogue – many who visit Belarus feel like they step back in time.
Things to See and Do
The country is home to a wealth of remarkable architecture, such as the Mir and Nesvizh Radziwill castles and the churches at Vitebsk, hometown of the painter Marc Chagall. First, we’ll visit the ancient cities of Grodno and Novogrudek. In addition, we’ll make stops at the great Volozhin, Radin, Mir, Novardok yeshivas. Finally, we’ll stop at the capital Minsk hero-city, to learn about the evolution of Belarusian architecture to the 1950s.
Modern Belarusian cuisine includes many traditional dishes. The most popular are pork stew (machanka), homemade sausages (vereshchaka), thick potato pancakes (draniki),baked grated potato pie (babka), while you rarely see a menu without dumplings (Kolduny / Kletski). In addition, soups are a favorite: Cold Sorrel soup, Mushroom soup and so on. Since the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Belarus’ culinary traditions have been a mix of Baltic, Slavic, Jewish and German influences.
