Dubbed the “Happiest Country on Earth,” the Kingdom of Denmark is much more than a danish pastry and a friendly smile. Emerging from Viking roots to be a world player in the 10th century, it’s said to be the oldest kingdom still existing today. As a Scandinavian people, their language and culture has close ties with Norway, Iceland, Sweden and the Faroe Islands.
Nestled between the North and Baltic Seas, Denmark is comprised of a peninsula and an archipelago of over 400 islands. The capital of Copenhagen sits on the largest island, Zealand. No inhabitant lives farther than 52 kilometers (32 mi) from the shore!
The star of the show is undoubtedly Copenhagen, with its medieval houses and rococo buildings. Easily explored by foot or bike, the city is a hub for trendy Nordic cuisine, the iconic Mermaid, and fun attractions like the Tivoli, the oldest amusement park in the world. Pass by the autonomous district of Christiania or pay a visit to the impressive Gefion Fountain. Sample the brews at the Carlsberg Brewery and admire the art at Ny Glyptotek. A must-see is definitely the Royal Amalienborg Palace, which you can catch just in time for the changing of the guard. Beyond Copenhagen, Denmark’s other main cities are Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense and Roskilde.
The Danish open-faced sandwich, or smørrebrød, is world-famous. The best part is that the toppings can be whatever you fancy–from herring to egg to seafood. Many chefs in Copenhagen are testing their mettle with innovative dishes, contemporary spins on old Scandinavian styles. As to be expected, seafood plays a big role here in Denmark, and don’t forget to wash it all down with a homemade schnapps.
