Step back in time to the Middle Ages in Germany’s Black Forest region.
Step back in time to the Middle Ages in Germany’s Black Forest region. Known as the setting for the Grimm fairy tales, the villages in the area still bear their medieval heritage proudly. Look out for charming timber-framed hamlets and medieval town squares.
Known in German as Schwarzwald, ancient mountain range of the Black Forest is shrouded in legends. It’s also famous cuckoo clocks, watchmaking, skiing and tourism. Among famous attractions to see are the Schwarzwaldhochstraße, a scenic road that runs through the forest, Lake Mummelsee, the medieval mine Schaubergwerk, and the city of Freiburg, known as the sunniest part of Germany. Visitors should also stop by the Deutsches Uhrenmuseum at Furtwangen, which houses the world’s largest collection of Cuckoo Clocks.
Some of Germany’s best beers and wines are produced in Schwarzwald. Cuisine tends to be hearty, featuring the highest density of star-rated restaurants in the country. Some well-known dishes include deer roasts, escargot soup, ox breast with horseradish sauce, spätzle, pancakes and pretzels.
