Whether you have or haven’t decided to travel to the Baltic States this article will tell you what other authors and guides won’t. I will try to be brief and not to exhaust you with too many details, which is not easy for somebody, who travels with a group for nine or more days and is used to tell a lot of details, stories, and different information. On top of that, there are ques of questions asked by the curious.
Tour to the Baltic States with a full guided program is oriented to people who travel in order to feed their natural curiosity, enjoy nature sightseeing in the Baltic States, experience some light adventure, learn about the history and heritage of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, taste local food and beverages, and listen to a local music and voices.
Did I mention all of the possible experiences? No, just the main fields and directions. This is the beauty of the Travel – everyone finds what he or she is looking for, or does not find.
On our guided tour to the Baltic States, we feel responsible to portray each of the Baltic Republics and to wear the hat of an ambassador, eager to help every guest get the most out of the visit.
Local expertise will pour on you the whole rain of information about the Baltic States. Nowadays life, historical facts, major events, legends, folk tales, songs, and more. One of the biggest advantages of hiring a local guide is that you actually buy a time with a person who will talk to you and with you with a passion for the whole duration of a tour. And quite often, it is not less important that your guide will listen to you and will be glad to know your point of view.
Our tour usually starts in Lithuania, which is the southern Baltic Country and can continue north to Latvia, and then again north to Estonia. Then from Estonia, you can take a flight back home or continue to Scandinavia, Russia, or any other country.
Unfortunately, there are not too many direct flight options to get to the Baltics. The biggest airport is in Riga, which is the very center of the Baltic States.
If you do not want to be bothered by connecting flight you will have fly to Riga and make an eight-figure shape tour of the three Baltic Republics and then finish your tour in Riga.
Here is a list of the Top Attraction Places in the Baltic States:
I think it is worth planning a mixture of city sightseeing and nature sites. In the Baltics you can swap days: Vilnius is a capital city, Trakai is a national park with a lot of lakes, Kaunas and Klaipeda area cities, Neringa is a National Park, Siauliai is famous for the Hill of Crosses, Palanga is a Baltic Sea resort, Riga is the biggest city in the Baltics, Sigulda is called “Latvian Switzerland”, famous for its hilly topography, Tartu is a University City, Pernu is again a resort and finally Tallinn is a city again.
These are major attractions, but you can be brave and go off the beaten path to the less touristic areas. Do not worry, it is safe and very comfortable to travel to more distant attractions.
For example, one of my favorites in Lithuania is Ignalina county, with its lakes and forests. You can spend time kayaking, trekking, or just staying in the farm-like accommodation. Or you can go to Daugavpils in Latvia, and visit Mark Rotko museum in the city he was born in. Or you can go to the city in the wind was born – Liepaja. Another interesting experience would be adding to a tour Estonian Islands – Saaremaa and Muhu, where one can still find untouched northern nature and calm people.
All travelers wonder what kind of accommodation to choose in a place. Today’s technology supplies us with the unnecessary amount of information about hotels or apartments, and still, there is a high chance that the picture will not reflect the reality and other travelers opinions will not match yours.
“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – A. Huxley
So, I would say that 4-star hotels in the Baltic States are absolutely fine quality with good breakfasts and friendly staff, 3-star hotels usually are not air-conditioned, but still a very good option for a good quality for a lower price. 2 -star lodging and hostels are quite popular among younger travelers and can be very cute. Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians like cleanliness and order, so even a simple place can be adequate and welcoming.
Now we come to the point! Food. Food. Food. Some tours are “Waking and talking” and some tours are “Walking and Eating”. One of our major concerns is what will we eat in a foreign place.
Lithuanian food is based on meat, fish, and local vegetables. “Black bread”, “white cheese” and potato dumplings are business cards of the so-called national cuisine. Historically spices were quite expensive and national dishes may seem a little plain, at the same time, today local chefs are not afraid to alternate and offer fusion type cuisine.
You can find some unusual drinks in Lithuania too. People like “Gira” – bread based fermented drink, all kinds of fruit and vegetable juices and homemade compote. Alcohol is a big thing here too. Lithuanian beers are world acknowledged, they like to make liquors and vodka.
Do not forget to taste Lithuanian Herring, Smoked meat and fish, Zeppelins, homemade jams, and honey. If you are sweet-teeth, the variety of pies and chocolate will be at your disposal in any restaurant or coffee place.
After having tasted all of that you will move to Latvia. A stranger can say the food must be the same as it is the same area and so on, but it differs. Latvian food has more of a German influence, I’d say.
If you go to a national cuisine restaurant in Latvia, you would be amazed by the taste and, excuse me, the simplicity of the dishes. You can start from boiled “Black Peas” with small snippets of bacon and a class of Cesu Beer.
People eat a lot of Wild mushrooms but do not forget that it is seasonal, and the fresh ones will be only from July until September. The Royal Catfish would be a good choice of fish. Venison dishes are very popular too.
Now again to the forest for a glass of Birch juice, sweet strawberries, and sour cherries. Excellent honey can be put on a white cheese with a piece of a black bread and you can say that you eat like real Latvian.
Apple and rhubarb cakes are very popular, and it would a surprise to taste rhubarb wine too. And of course – beer brewed by local masters and do not forget to taste a “Bread Soup” for your dessert.
Now to our northern Sister – Estonia. To taste the best Rye Bread. I have to tell you that all northern and eastern countries eat very high-quality rye bread and everyone states that his recipe is the best and healthiest.
Aspic with meat or chicken is another healthy dish you can find in Estonia. It is very reached with gelatin for your joints. Estonians like Pickled Everything, Smoked Sprats and other kinds of a local fish.
There are lots of tourist-oriented restaurants in Tallinn Old city but if you know to follow a side street you can find that local Chefs are very good. At the same time never mind relatively slow service. “Good needs time”.
