Delve deep into the history of Jews in Lithuania

Dive deep into Vilnius jewish history, a story of prosperous Jewish life and it’s sudden and devastating demise. The city, known as Jerusalem of Lithuania, had the largest Jewish population (over 45% Jewish) in all of eastern Europe. We had 105 synagogues, six daily Jewish newspapers and the language of choice was Yiddish.

But then everything changed when the Nazi party, fueled by violent anti semitism, took control. During the occupation over 90 percent of all jews who lived there were brutally murdered. Jewish people were shot, gassed, and imprisoned in ghettos with the worst conditions.

Then, when the Soviet Union came and chased away the Nazis,  conditions didn’t improve. Under the strict anti religious Soviet regime Jewish culture continued to dwindle. During a census in 2005 the Jewish population was estimated to be only 2000 people in all of Lithuania.

Today the Jewish community is once again growing and remains close and strong. Heritage trips and community events are common and help educate the new generation about their past and preserve Jewish culture. People from all over the world, even from the United States come to pay their respects at the Vilnius Jewish cemetery.
