Tour Plan

Day 1 - Part 1 History of the Independence Square
Day 1 - Part 2 The story of Minsk Jews
Day 1 - Part 1

History of the Independence Square

We will begin the Minsk City Tour at the independence square, one of the biggest squares in Europe. There you will find the Supreme Soviet of Belarus, the Minsk City Hall, the Belarussian state university and the beautiful Saints Simeon and Elena neogothic style Church. Underneath the square, is a huge shopping mall where you will be able to buy souvenirs and other local goodies.

Will walk through the independence street towards the Republic Square, which is the main place for important meetings, demonstrations, and celebrations. On the way there we will see monumental Soviet-style architecture buildings, built after WWII. As Minsk was badly devastated, 87% of the city had to be rebuilt. We will take a walk down a small part of the Old Town called Troyetskoye suburb. It is the only part of Minsk which remained intact after the war.

Day 1 - Part 2

The story of Minsk Jews

Later in the day we’ll go down through the narrow streets, towards the Svisloch River, where we will pass what used to be a Synagogue. Thanks to the efforts of a Jewish architect, it was authentically renovated. But unfortunately, due to the Soviet regime its identity had to remain hidden and was made into a museum.

We will then visit the Jewish community center and a small museum of local Jewish History. We’ll pay our respects at the Yama memorial for the Jews who perished in Minsk during the Nazi occupation. An obelisk was built on the exact spot where five thousand Jews were slaughtered.

After seeing the obelisk, we will enter the Minsk Synagogue and walk around the Minsk ghetto.

The tour will end with a visit to the Jewish Cemetery in Minsk.
