Two capitals of Russia: Moscow and Saint Petersburg

Explore the jewels of Russian architecture, fine arts and music. We will start our tour from the heart of Russia, the Red Square in Moscow, visit the Kremlin, its spectacular Orthodox churches and the famous Armory. 

Admire the outstanding collection of the Russian fine arts of the 18-19 centuries at the State Tretyakov gallery, as well as the world-known Russian avant-garde at the new “Tretyakovka” in Moscow. 

Observe the Stalin’s high-rises and the ultra-modern Moscow-City, walk along the famous Arbat street and discover the rich decorated stations of the Moscow subway. 

Visit the famous Bolshoi theater and admire the great Russian ballet performance. Move by the speed train to Saint Petersburg and discover the Russian “Northern Palmyra”.

Most European city of Russia is famous for its palaces and churches built in Russian Baroque style. We will take an unforgettable cruise along the Neva river and the numerous canals. 

Visit world-famous Hermitage museum and admire the masterpieces of Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt and other great world artists.

We will visit the great Imperial Palaces in Peterhof and Pushkin and will be enraptured by spectacular fountains and by the famous Amber room.

Day 1

Arrive in Moscow

Upon your arrival a sightseeing tour of the capital of Russia. Transfer to the hotel for rest and welcome dinner.

Day 2

Moscow city introduction tour

Start exploring the city from the Red Square, the heart of Russia. See the colourful Saint Basil Cathedral an outstanding masterpiece of Russian Orthodox architecture. On that same square one can see Lenin’s mausoleum. Continue to the Kremlin, the former residence of Russian tzars and today’s office of the president of Russian Federation. Walking in the Cathedral Square and see the Tsar Cannon, Tsar Bell and three Cathedrals of 15-16c. Visit the fabulous Armoury  Museum home to a vast array of priceless Imperial Russian Treasures including royal crowns, luxurious carriages, great collection of Fabergé eggs and many other artifacts. After the Kremlin go out to Alexander Park and see the Unknown Soldier Tomb and the obelisk for the Romanov dynasty. Continue by bus to explore the examples of Stalin “Empire” style architecture. 

Day 3

Moscow and its arts

After breakfast visit to the State Tretyakov Gallery an art museum the greatest depository of Russian fine art in the world. It contains over 130.000  exhibits ranging from the icons of Andrey Rubliov to the masterpieces of modern art such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. Continue to Novodevichy cemetery the most prestigious resting place of great writers, poets, composers, artists and politicians, among them Chekhov, Gogol, Bulgakov, Mayakovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Khrushchev, Yeltsin and others. After the break stroll along the famous pedestrian street Arbat with its variety of handiwork, coffee shops and street artists. In the evening visit to Bolshoi Theatre to enjoy ballet or opera performance.

Day 4

Moscow - Sergiev Posad - Moscow

Morning drive to Sergiev Posad to visit one of the holiest places of Russia the stunningHoly Trinity Saint Sergius founded by Saint  Sergey Radoniezhsky in 14th century. For centuries this monastery has been one of the main places of pilgrimage for Russian Orthodox believers. After return to Moscow visit GUM a great shopping mall with its magnificent interiors of  three elegantly designed floors and a glass roofed central courtyard. Finish the tour day by riding a few stops on the subway – Moscow Metro, renowned for the ornate splendor of its stations lavishly decorated in marble and mosaics, by chandeliers and statues.

Day 5

Moscow - Saint Petersburg

In the morning visit to Poklonnaya Gora and Victory park an open air memorial to see a golden-domed Orthodox church erected on the hilltop in 1993-95, followed by a memorial Moscue and the Holocaust Memorial Synagogue. Transfer to Moscow railway station to board the high-speed train to Saint Petersburg. After late afternoon arrival to the Northern capital of Russia a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city located on numerous islands of Neva river and its tributaries and connected with close to 500 bridges.

Day 6

Most popular highlights in St. Petersburg

Start exploring the city from Peter and Paul fortress built by Peter the Great in 1703. Visit the fortress cathedral whose spire of 122.5 m is seen from elsewhere in the city and has become a symbol of Saint Petersburg. The crypts of all Russian tsars after Peter the Great in Petropavlovskaya Cathedral tell the history of Russian Empire throughout 200 years. Continue to Vasilyevsky island, its lay-out designed by Tsar Peter himself, and housing the first University in Russia, the Academy of the Fine Arts, “Kunstkamera” – the first museum in Russia and others. On to the left bank of the Neva river to admire the Bronze Horseman monument to Peter the Great, stroll along the famous Nevsky avenue, visit impressive Kazan Cathedral, see spectacular Anichkov bridge with its four Horse Tamers sculptures, enter the historic Yeliseyevsky store, one of Saint  Petersburg’s oldest food stores designed in Art Nouveau style. Finish the day by visiting Yusupov Palace that belonged to one of the wealthiest noble families in Russia. Today it houses a museum reflecting the 19-20 c. Russian nobility mode of life and also tells the mysterious story of Rasputin’s murder.

Day 7

From Saint Petersburg to Peterhof

Morning drive to Peterhof Palace and Gardens Ensemble one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Visit  the Grand Palace of “Russian Versailles”, admire Monplaisir and Marly palaces and especially the Great Cascade of gorgeous fountains decorated by gilded statues of biblical subjects. Back to Saint Petersburg to visit huge Saint Isaac’s Cathedral the fourth largest domed cathedral in the world. Its interior is richly decorated with paintings of the leading Russian artists and mosaics that one can hardly tell them from a painting. 14 types of different colours of Italian marble were used for the interior decoration. At the end of the day visit to Smolny Convent of the Resurrection.  Smolny Cathedral a stunning blue-and-white building is undoubtedly one of the architectural masterpieces of the Italian architect F.B.Rastrelli who has built a lot of the constructions in the city, including the Winter Palace.

Day 8

Saint Petersburg art treasures

Start the day tour in Alexander Nevsky Lavra (resting place). It contains a monastery and two cemeteries which are the reason  for your visit. They hold the remains of many Russia’s outstanding cultural figures, their gravestones are pieces of art themselves. You’ll pay tribute to Dostoyevsky and Tchaikovsky; fellow composers Rimsky-Korsakov, Glinka, and Mussorgsky; founder of Russia’s first university Mikhail Lomonosov and mathematician Leonhard Euler, architects Quarenghi, Rossi and Voronikhin and many others.  Next visit the Winter Palace and one of the greatest world art museums Hermitage. Spend a few good hours admiring the masterpieces of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Monet, Renoir Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse and many, many others. In the evening visit Mariinsky Theatre for enjoy ballet or opera performance.

Day 9

Visit to Tsarskoye Selo

In the morning drive to the town Pushkin, former name Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar’s village). Visit Catherine Palace constructed in the 18th century for the Russian Empress Elisabeth I, the daughter of Peter the Great, as her Summer residence. Walk through a magnificent gallery of gala rooms where balls, receptions, and official dinners took place, see a rich collection of furniture and pieces of applied art, which belonged to the Royal family. The main point of interest is the world famous and unique Amber Room, the whole surface of its walls are covered with natural amber. Walk in a beautiful park around the Palace. Upon return to Saint Petersburg visit the extremely colourful “Church of Our Savior on the Spilt Blood” – a memorial church which was built in the place where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. Finish your stay in Saint Petersburg by another glance on the city – a cruise along the rivers and numerous canals of the area.
